Text Alert System to Help Fishermen Avoid Endangered Sturgeon

Supported by the Lenfest Ocean Program, Drs. Matthew Oliver and Matthew Breece of the University of Delaware, along with a team of researchers have developed a new text alert system to help fishermen avoid Atlantic sturgeon catch when searching for other species.

The tool is based on a statistical model that predicts the presence of Atlantic sturgeon with 88 percent accuracy using environmental conditions. Subscribers to the alert system will be sent text messages telling them the locations and depths where Atlantic sturgeon are most likely to be found, helping them avoid the species.
