Lenfest Marine Extinction Project

OVERVIEW

Although ocean life was previously viewed as a vast and limitless resource, many ocean species are now at risk for extinction due to fishing and other pressures. This project documents how the abundance and distribution of important marine species, from the open ocean, coastal areas, coral reefs and the inshore coastal zone, have changed in response to fishing and habitat alteration over the past 50 to 100 years. It also predicts how these species are likely to change in the future, given current trends in human use and a number of alternative policy scenarios under consideration.
