IUCN Red List Assessments for Tuna and Billfish

Project Overview:
Kent Carpenter (Old Dominion University, VA, USA)
The Global Marine Species Assessment, an initiative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Conservation International, is assessing more than 20,000 marine species for inclusion on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Tuna, along with billfish, play a large role in the commercial fishing industry and are primary sources of protein and revenue in small-scale fisheries of many coastal developing countries. Many tuna and billfish species are being over exploited and this project will aid in producing final IUCN Red List assessments for the 65 species of tuna and billfish.
