Strengthening Deep Sea Fishing Protections

In 2006, the United Nations (UN) passed a resolution on high seas bottom fishing, committing all high seas fishing nations to 1) conduct assessments of the impact of bottom fisheries and 2) prevent “significant adverse impacts” on “vulnerable marine ecosystems” from bottom fishing activities on the high seas. This project facilitated a scientific review of draft guidelines on designating vulnerable marine areas for the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) related to the resolution on high seas bottom fishing.
