Implementing Effective Fisheries Management Practices in the United States

Implementing Effective Fisheries Management Practices in the United States

In 2006, the U.S. Congress passed new mandates to advance sustainable fisheries, including requirements to set annual catch limits for all fisheries and to implement measures to ensure accountability. This project convened two working groups – one on setting annual fisheries catch limits in data-poor situations and the second on best fisheries management practices - in order to inform development of regulations implementing the re-authorized Magnuson Stevens Fisheries Conservation Act. The project also convened a scientific workshop that brought experts together to develop a methodology for fisheries managers to adopt in data-poor situations in order to estimate the vulnerability of fish populations to overfishing.
