Webinar: Advancing Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management in Indonesia

Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) is a critical step toward sustaining small-scale fisheries in the face of climate and environmental change. In a webinar on March 19, 2025, Dr. Irfan Yulianto and Dr. Heidi Retnoningtyas shared how their team in Indonesia is working to move beyond traditional single-species assessments by incorporating ecosystem indicators into fisheries management. Their work builds on earlier research that developed the Ecosystem Traits Index (ETI)—a tool that combines indicators of ecosystem structure and function to help managers assess ecosystem health and identify when action is needed. This project aims to align fisheries management in Saleh Bay with EBFM principles and provide a model for similar efforts in other regions.
