In a move heralded as a significant step in incorporating ecosystem approaches in fisheries management, the US Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is now using ecological reference points (ERPs) in the Atlantic menhaden fishery.

On June 17, 2021, the Lenfest Ocean Program and OCTO (EBM Tools Network, The Skimmer, OpenChannels, MPA News, MarineDebris.info) co-hosted the webinar "Fostering Ecosystem Approaches in Fisheries Management: The Case of Atlantic Menhaden." Andre Buchheister of Humboldt State University, David Chagaris of University of Florida, Daniel Howell of the Institute of Marine Research, Karen Abrams of NOAA Fisheries, along with Jason Landrum and Emily Knight of the Lenfest Ocean Program (moderator) presented on the importance of Atlantic menhaden as forage fish and the decision to pursue ERPs, insights on how to tailor complex ecosystem models to management needs, and some next steps in continuing to integrate ecosystem approaches into fisheries management.
