Evaluating the Decline of Sharks in the Mediterranean

Over the last 50 years, fishing pressure has increased in the world’s oceans, and large sharks have shown dramatic population declines. In the Mediterranean Sea, their abundance levels are particularly low, and sharks have disappeared from many coastal areas. This project assesses the magnitude of shark declines in the Mediterranean over the past two centuries and evaluates both the status of current populations and the ecological consequences of the loss of Mediterranean sharks.
