The Socio-economics of the Patagonian Sea

Economics of the Patagonian Sea

OVERVIEW

The Patagonian Sea is the name given to the marine ecosystem off the southern coast of Argentina, an area which harbors some of the Southern Hemisphere’s richest marine resources, including breeding and feeding aggregations of elephant seals, penguins, albatross and whales. The area is also subject to industrial development and illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, especially for Patagonian toothfish and squid. This project evaluates the socio-economic value of the Patagonian Sea and identifies the economic motivations behind threats to the region.
