A new suite of manuscripts published in Frontiers in Marine Science details the methods and processes behind the adoption of ecological reference points (ERPs) for Atlantic menhaden. In a significant milestone towards incorporating ecosystem considerations in fisheries management, a team of researchers worked with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) to develop and tailor an ecosystem model to define the novel menhaden ERPs. These ERPs take into account the effects of menhaden fishing on their predators including fish, seabirds, and marine mammals, with a primary focus on striped bass.

The papers were published under the research topic “Using Ecological Models to Support and Shape Environmental Policy Decisions,” and examine different aspects of the science-to-management process with respect to managing Atlantic menhaden:
